MARLENE ROHR
Marlene and her husband, Gary, have served in various Canadian church and parachurch ministries since they were married in 1979. Blessed with four wonderful children, Julie, Heidi, Marcie, and Jeremy, and twelve precious grandchildren; Marlene homeschooled the children for over ten years, followed by working as an educational assistant and library tech for the Edmonton Public School Board for the next fifteen years. Upon her father’s passing in 2013, she and Gary assumed new roles and responsibilities in continuing his legacy in business and philanthropic matters. She has also volunteered for a senior’s foundation as the auxiliary president where she oversaw the planning of special events and fundraising endeavours. She is now on the Canada West regional advisory team for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
In 2015, their eldest daughter, Julie, was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a rare incurable cancer of soft muscle tissues. After six years of various surgeries, treatments, and procedures, she was ushered into the gentle embrace of eternity on September 16, 2021.
Since Julie’s passing, they have been actively involved in the care and support of Julie’s son Max, who was twelve when his mom passed away. Another terminal diagnosis was recently made in their family; Lily, the daughter of their son, was diagnosed with a rare genetic brain disease called Batten Disease CLN2. This has been another difficult challenge for the whole family to navigate. Marlene also enjoys spending time reading, writing, journaling, traveling, painting, creating, hosting meals and gatherings with family and friends. She is honored to be part of the OHAH Team and for the opportunity to support other bereaved parents in this capacity.
