Creator Love

Last week, for the first time in over a year, I flew on a commercial airplane. I’ll admit that the first leg of the flight was a little nerve-wracking, but my hesitancies melted away and the rest of the flights were fine. 

When I fly, I always think of Nathan. He had his solo pilot’s license before he even had a driver’s license. He LOVED to fly. If you’d like to read more about that, read this previous blog post. 

During the layover in Charlotte, I also thought of Nathan. When we walked past the currency exchange booth, I remembered how I had exchanged some U.S. dollars for the currency of the countries he was heading to the last time I was with him. I kept those foreign coins on my desk and prayed for him during his trip. Of course, I never expected that to be our final earthly hug, but knew I’d see him again after he completed language school in France and explored parts of the world that he had hoped to see. 

Something else I noticed this time at the airport was the vast number of people. Of course, I’d noticed them before and wondered who they all were, but this time it seemed that the Lord laid on my heart a different perspective. Instead of rushing to the next gate with my mind on my agenda, I looked at people closely. The diversity of physical features and personality was amazing. As Gary and I walked, we saw a few very tall young men, who likely were basketball players; at least they looked the part. There were elderly people being transported in wheelchairs, families with exuberant children, people with support animals, teens, business people, couples — every age and type that could be imagined. Some people appeared to be happy, while others looked weary and burdened.

I thought about who each person was and wondered what their lives were like. Do they know Jesus? Are they married? What are their professions? Where are they heading? Are they grieving? 

One of the most powerful realizations that I’ve had since losing Nathan from earthly life is to truly recognize the unconditional love of God for me and for each of the people that He has created. From the time that I was a child, I sang songs like Jesus Loves Me and read verses in the Bible about His love, but it was only through deep sorrow and grief that I have truly experienced it. 

I now see that God, the One who created each of us, loves us beyond what we can imagine. He made each of us unique, with purpose and a plan to be in a relationship with Him. No matter how much I can say that I love Nathan, his Creator loves him infinitely more. Ours is only human love — His is Creator love. 

If you do not realize how deeply God loves you, I hope you will take the time to read these passages anew. I hope in recognizing His deep, unconditional, unending love for you, that you’ll find comfort, peace, and purpose to run this earthly race until the day you join your loved ones in His presence. 

I John 3:1 “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!“

Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Lamentations 3:22-23 “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Romans 8:38-39  “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Ephesians 3:17a-19 “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

Isaiah 54:10 “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.”

Finally, I encourage you to read Psalm 139 in its entirety. As you read it, I hope you’ll recognize that you are deeply loved and intimately known by your Creator. You can trust Him.
