Where is God?
March 23, 2023 — Laura House
Throughout this week there have been an unusual number of people sharing their sorrows with me and asking the question, “Where is God?” That is a question that you may have posed at times in your life as well.
We look at our world and the evil that abounds and wonder why God doesn’t finish His plan right here and now and stop the pain and suffering.
And closer to home, we all have friends and family who are navigating physical illness and just need healing. Instantaneously God could heal them, but as of now, He hasn’t done that yet. Why does God sometimes intervene and heal someone here on earth, and other times, doesn’t?
Then there is the agony of loss. Before Nathan went to Heaven, I didn’t know anyone who had lost a child. Now? I meet them everywhere. There are no adequate words to describe child loss.
Where is God?
My friend, I will tell you where I have discovered that He is.
He is right beside you and me, where He has always been; loving us, holding us, shaping us, and inviting us to trust Him and let Him comfort and guide us.
Several years ago Steven Curtis Chapman wrote a song that I have remembered throughout the years when suffering has entered my story and the “Where is God?” question surfaces. The words remind me of the last few chapters of the Book of Job where God reminds Job that He is the Maker of All.
Friends, we are not going to understand the “why’s” while we are here on earth, but we can choose to trust the One who is sovereign, who created us and loves us with “an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3b). It’s comforting to know that nothing can separate us from that love (Romans 8:38-39). “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Where is God? He is with us. And one day very soon, He will make everything new.
Put your trust in Him.
God is God
And the pain falls like a curtain
On the things I once called certain
And I have to say the words I fear the most
I just don't know
And the questions without answers
Come and paralyze the dancer
So I stand here on the stage afraid to move
Afraid to fall, oh, but fall I must
On this truth that my life has been formed from the dust
CHORUS:
God is God and I am not
I can only see a part of the picture He's painting
God is God and I am man
So I'll never understand it all
For only God is God
And the sky begins to thunder
And I'm filled with awe and wonder
'Til the only burning question that remains
Is who am I
Can I form a single mountain
Take the stars in hand and count them
Can I even take a breath without God giving it to me
He is first and last before all that has been
Beyond all that will pass
CHORUS:
God is God and I am not
I can only see a part of the picture He's painting
God is God and I am man
So I'll never understand it all
For only God is God
Oh, how great are the riches of His wisdom and knowledge
How unsearchable; for to Him and through Him and from Him are all things
So let us worship before the throne
Of the One who is worthy of worship alone
CHORUS:
God is God and I am not
I can only see a part of the picture He's painting
God is God and I am man
So I'll never understand it all
For only God is God
